City Caravans and Rocking Rockingham

Hello...can you hear me all you people over east???

Ha. Our next post comes to you direct from Rockingham, 50km south of Perth - aka the other side of the country. To the people here, back home is 'over east'. Quite relevant when you think about it...to get back to the east coast, you have some serious kilomenters to travel....either via Nullabor Plain, or accross the top on the Savannah way, or through the desert...Not that appealing really, any way you slice it...

Now, a week (or so) has passed since the last update, and as promised both to you and my husband, I will begin by showing you the feast we enjoyed on our extra night at Big Brook Dam near Pemberton...we stayed an extra night for a spit roast, as we had not previously used the spit, or camp oven! It was well worth it, let me tell you!

I believe chums, that upon last typing we were situated in Nannup waiting for a horrific cyclone...which predictably fizzled out (probably gave all its power to cyclone Yasi...).

So, safe and sound, we headed for the coast. The weather was still not ideal for beaching it though, so when we got to Augusta we booked in to tour a lighthouse and three caves.

Cape Leeuwin is the South West corner of Australia, where the Southern Ocean meets the Indian Ocean. It is here where everyone turns a corner...and although it was overcast and blowing a gale, the tour was not too bad.

From there we explored three limestone caves....I believe we are now expert Speleologists who don't really need to see the inside of a limestone cave any time soon...there are only so many cave formations you can see although, we both agreed that the ones we saw at Jewel Cave were the most impressive formations we have seen in caves, and Lake Cave, while small, boasts an awesome suspended table.

We stopped in Margaret River briefly - very nice town that just makes you want to smile. This is the wine region, and while we didn't go to any winerys (simply because we only really had the time to do one, and there were so many we couldn't decide...) we did go to a chocolate factory - I have never seen so much chocolate/chocolate themed products in my life. They even had choco-chilli tea!! And free tastings...we went back three times (Caleb's idea...). On the same property was a small gourmet food shop where they had great preserves, olive oil, spices and wine you could taste.

Bussleton Jetty
From Margaret River, we travelled north to Busselton where we stopped for lunch and a walk out on the jetty. Now, this jetty is nearly 2km long and we were very dissappointed only 200m of it was open to the public as the end was undergoing maintenance...we think this will have to be an outing for another day....

Moving up the coast, we stopped briefly in Bunbury, decided we didn't particularly like Bunbury, and then left Bunbury. Part of this was the mistake of driving into the city with the van on the back and then missing the turn off to the van park, and needing to do a U-Turn on the highway. Awful traffic in Bunbury. Oh the joys of travelling!

And so we reached Rockingham. It is here we have started looking for work once again (thanks to extensive car maintenance). In between we did manage to pay a visit to the Freemantle Prison, the largest convict built structure in Australia. Caleb has managed to get some work on the industrial strip between here and Perth, and hopefully this develops into something more substantial. As me me, I am still looking. We were ultra productive on Sunday and attended two church services (to make up for all the Sundays we have missed...and because the morning service was literally, full of grey hair....good service for the oldies. Our first warning sign was the nice lady on the door exclaiming "yes it's a nice church, and we need more young people!").

So, once again munchkins, I must depart. Rest assured the camera sensor is still active and although the next few weeks/months may come accross as dull, I will endeavour to make them exciting. Keep it real and keep in touch.

Toodles
